Upgrade Priority for Strength to Tug of War
Phase-by-phase equipment purchases ranked by strength-per-step return.
Upgrade priority separates fast accounts from stalled ones in +1 Strength to Tug of War. This guide goes deeper than the tier list hub with phase-by-phase purchase lists, rebirth timing checkpoints, and traps that look efficient but waste steps. All rankings are strategy advice—Tough Guy Studio can change prices or stats on any Saturday update listed on the updates page.
Core rule: strength per step
Every recommendation here uses one metric: Strength gained per step divided by currency cost. Raw Strength on your HUD is a result, not a strategy. Two players with the same total Strength can progress at different speeds if one bought multipliers early and the other hoarded currency for a flashy late purchase that barely moves the needle.
Before buying anything, read the equipment hub to understand how slots stack with pets, rebirth bonuses, and tug-of-war rewards.
Phase 1 — first twenty minutes (World 1)
Goal: reach the first meaningful multiplier without stopping movement.
- Buy the cheapest equipment tier that shows a per-step or percent Strength bonus in its tooltip. If two items cost similar prices, pick the one whose bonus applies while walking, not only during duels.
- Keep walking in loops described on the controls page while menus are open. Never stand at a vendor idle unless you are waiting for a duel queue.
- Ignore cosmetic-only items even if they look stronger visually. Muscles scaling with Strength is cosmetic feedback, not a stat substitute.
- Redeem verified codes from the codes page before spending hard-earned currency on items codes might replace with boosts. We do not list unverified strings.
Checkpoint: if your next upgrade takes less than ten minutes of walking at current speed, stay in Phase 1. If it takes longer, move to Phase 2 purchases or consider an upcoming rebirth (see Phase 3).
Phase 2 — world unlocks and tug-of-war gates
Goal: meet duel requirements without pausing Strength income.
- S priority: any upgrade that doubles effective steps per minute in the active world. These are usually mid-tier shoes, belts, or training gear—names vary by patch.
- A priority: win-related boosts if tug-of-war victories gate the next zone. Losing duels repeatedly means you are under-upgraded relative to the bracket; return to S-tier multipliers before retrying.
- B priority: convenience teleports, emotes, or duplicate stat lines from earlier worlds.
When a new world opens, re-run Phase 1 logic inside that world before importing habits from the previous zone. World 2 cheap gear often beats World 1 max gear on a per-step basis even if the icon looks less impressive.
Phase 3 — rebirth timing and recovery
Rebirth resets progress in exchange for permanent multipliers. The classic mistake is rebirthing while cheap S-tier upgrades remain unpurchased, or waiting so long that walk speed feels halved for hours.
Use this decision flow:
- Open the rebirth guide and note current Strength, win, or world requirements.
- Plug estimates into the rebirth planner to compare five more minutes of upgrades versus resetting now.
- Rebirth when the next S-tier upgrade would take noticeably longer than the previous tier and you meet stated requirements—unless a Saturday patch notes imminent rebirth bonus changes (updates).
After rebirth:
- Rebuy cheapest S-tier multipliers immediately.
- Re-equip pets or companions that persist through resets (confirm in-game; systems change).
- Resume the same walking route; do not change controls mid-recovery.
Phase 4 — multi-world progression
Late game is a chain of world entry → re-establish S tier → push tug-of-war rank → rebirth. Players juggling multiple worlds should keep a mental budget:
| Spend bucket | Target share of currency |
|---|---|
| S-tier step multipliers | 60–70% |
| Duel/win gates | 20–30% |
| B-tier cosmetics/convenience | 0–10% until everything else is capped |
If you fall below 60% on multipliers, log a session note and compare with the tier list hub—you are likely buying flex items too early.
Traps that feel efficient but are not
- Hoarding Strength for one giant purchase while walking with base multipliers. Opportunity cost grows every step.
- Chasing duplicate gear with identical stat lines because a YouTube thumbnail highlighted it. Compare numbers, not creators.
- Using unverified scripts promising auto-walk or auto-upgrade. The scripts page explains account risks; legitimate progress comes from controls, equipment, codes, and rebirth planning.
- Skipping Saturday patch notes and following last week’s priority list. Re-run Phase 1 checks after each update.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers players look up before every session.
What is the first upgrade I should buy?
The cheapest equipment item that increases Strength per step while walking. Exact names change; read live tooltips in World 1.
When should I stop upgrading and rebirth?
When affordable S-tier upgrades are exhausted and the next tier would take much longer than the previous one, and you meet rebirth requirements.
Do tug-of-war wins matter for upgrades?
Yes when wins gate worlds or rebirth. If you lose repeatedly, return to step multipliers before spending on duel-only boosts.
Are these priorities the same after every rebirth?
The logic repeats: rebuild S-tier multipliers first, then duel gates, then cosmetics. Numeric thresholds change with rebirth count.
Can codes replace early upgrades?
Codes may grant temporary boosts or currency. Check the codes page for verified rewards only, then adjust your purchase order.
Where do pets fit in upgrade priority?
Treat stat-bearing pets as S or A tier depending on cost. Empty pet slots waste steps; equip the best moving bonus you own.
